KATHMANDU, Jan 10: The Nepali Congress has been paralyzed by a nationwide for and against drive as the rival camp made an intense push for a special general convention (SGC) even after the party’s top decision body turned down the proposal backed by the two general secretaries.
Although the central work execution committee, the top decision-making body of the NC, had rejected the idea of SGC, arguing it was illegal and meaningless, and the general convention has been scheduled after the March 5 election to the House of Representatives, General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma have not budged from their stance to hold SGC.
It has resulted in a vertical division in the party- one faction for the SGC and another against it.
Now, with Thapa and Sharma all set to hold SGC at Bhrikutimandap on January 11-12, news reports have been coming from across the country suggesting that some NC's district and province committees are issuing circulars to the convention representatives in their particular favour.
Pressure mounts within NC to hold general convention soon
In this connection, all eight district presidents of NC in Madhes Province have urged the leaders, cadres and members not to engage in the activities being carried out against party statute.
The district presidents of NC issued a joint press statement on Friday, arguing that only the central working committee has the right to call a general convention or SGC, so the leaders need not attend the SGC. They also reminded the leaders and cadres to strongly abide by the party decision, policy and discipline.
On the other hand, the NC Gulmi district committee has called on all its district's national convention representatives to attend the SGC.
District committee president Khildhwoj Panthi issued a press statement on Friday and appealed to all representatives within the district for their attendance in the SGC.
Emphasizing the upcoming SGC's importance as an event to decide on the party's ideological clarity, organizational unity, internal democracy and contemporary political challenges of the country, Panthi urged for the same.
"Since Nepali Congress is not merely an organization, it is a foundation for democracy, inclusiveness and prosperous Nepal, all the representatives are requested to attend the SGC," the statement read, cautioning that their absence could directly affect the party's and country's future.
Meanwhile, nine out of 10 district presidents of NC in Karnali Province have issued circulars against the SGC. They appealed to all concerned not to attend it.
They issued a joint press statement and urged leaders against SNC.
