Inmates at Salyan prison on strike

SALYAN, March 20: Inmates at the District Prison, Salyan have begun a strike, putting for a 12-point demand including resolving the problems of drinking water among others.



The inmates have reportedly not been able to bathe and wash clothes for the past three months due to lack of water, and had also taken ill.



Their demands includes among others a weekly health check-up, increment of allowance from Rs. 45 to Rs. 80, newspapers and books, sports and entertainment and employment-oriented training.



The prison is presently home to a total of 48 inmates including five women and five children.
