Police had apprehended Niranjan Hajoi, a leader of Dima Halim Daogah (DHD) which is active in some parts of Assam state in India, upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport from Singapore on Friday evening. [break]
Hajoi was taken back to India by the Indian officials after a special task force of Nepal Police handed him over to the Indian officials immediately after his arrest, the sources said.
According to media reports from Assam, Indian prosecutors presented Hajoi at the Guwahati Special Court on Monday while the DHD supporters called a general strike in the state headquarters demanding his release.
Nepal Police, however, denied that they arrested Hajoi. “I do not know about it, and it clearly means the incident did not take place,” said police spokesman Bigyan Raj Sharma.
Hajoi, who had been living in Singapore for years, had planned to take shelter in Nepal, according to Assam Tribune daily.
DHD is an offshoot of the erstwhile Dimasa National Security Force (DNSF), which had surrendered en masse to Indian security forces in 1995, except for its self-styled Commander-in-Chief Jewel Garlossa, who subsequently formed the DHD.
