Officials at the Ministry of Irrigation said the move by India is expected to address inundation problem caused due to lack of outlet for Gandhaliya drains. "India has already started works to provide outlet for the Gandhaliya drain," said the ministry´s spokesperson Mathura Dangol“ "This will help lessen inundation problem caused due to Laxmanpur barrage." The drains cause inundation in various nine VDCs covering 40 square kilometers along the Nepal-India border in Banke district every monsoon due to the embankment constructed by India.
Nepal had long been asking India to resolve the problem of inundation caused by constructions across the border during bilateral talks held between Nepal and India in recent years. Ministry of Irrigation had pushed Indian authorities to provide unregulated passage to Gandhaliya and Sotia nalas to address inundation problem in Banke district.
Indian authorities, however, agreed to provide outlet only for Gandhaliya drains during a recently held meeting between the delegation of Nepal and India, according to Dangol.
