KANCHANPUR, Jan 28: India has started digging a trench unilaterally in no man´s land in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts without informing Nepal.

India has started digging the trench alone Mohana River that is connected with Dudhuwa even though the Sugauli Treaty prohibits any construction from both the sides in no man´s land. [break]

However, India encroached and began digging the trench at five-km distance around the area, said local residents.

They said India has deployed security personnel and dug the trench, which will inundate Nepali land. Rainwater that flow through Dankebazaar of Kanchanpur district will enter Nepali land and inundate it as India has dug 10-feet deep trench, said Deenbandu Aryal.

The Indian side, however, said the trench was dug to save Dudhuwa National Park with the aid from World Wildlife Fund.

Chief District Officer of Kanchanpur Buddhi Bahadur Khadka said the local administration did not receive any information about the trench construction plan. The administration will take necessary step and will take the issue to the higher level, he said. India cannot construct anything unilaterally in no man´s land, he said.
