"Creating an investment-friendly environment holds key to attracting foreign investment," Krishna told industrialists associated with Nepal-India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NICCI) during a meeting.[break]
NICCI representatives during the meeting appealed to Minister Krishna to help bring more Indian investment to Nepal.
NICCI had made presentations on different sectors including hydropower and education that have good business prospects in Nepal.
NICCI officials also highlighted activities the bilateral chamber was carrying out to promote bilateral trade and commerce, said Vishnu Prakash, spokesperson of India´s Ministry of External Affairs who was also present at the meeting. "The meeting basically focused on investment constraints in Nepal and also analyzed the opportunities," he told Republica.
Krishna, however, suggested to Nepal to first focus on the development of adequate infrastructures and improve security situation to assure the private sector.
"The Indian minister also expressed serious concerns over labor disputes and suggested that the entrepreneurs resolve them at the earliest," said Sanjiv Keshava of NICCI.
India is one of the largest foreign investment generating countries for Nepal. During the meeting, the Nepali entrepreneurs had also requested the Indian minister to help Nepal attract overseas investments as well.
