Local businesspersons have been importing inverters illegally from Raxaul after the government of Nepal banned its import.[break]
Businesspersons suggested that import of inverters should be open in the next budget to control its illegal import.
The government banned its import two years ago citing consumption of electricity was not decreased despite the use of inverters at a time when there was load shedding. The ban on import of inverters has also caused a loss of millions of rupees of revenue.
Though there is a ban on import of inverters, they are being sold openly at shops big or small in Birgunj.
Bodies concerned are silent in its monitoring as venders and general public are found bringing inverters by hiding when monitoring is done at the border.
A businessman, who has been selling inverters in Birgunj, said that import of inverters should be opened to control its illegal import and to increase the revenue.
Brokers provide home delivery service to customers after buying inverters of different capacity from the bordering market. Customers have to pay Rs 400- Rs. 600 per inverter for the home delivery service, said the source.
The source further said it was not difficult to import inverters illegally due to the open border. Brokers provide home delivery service from Indian market by taking 10 to 20 per cent transportation charge.
Business of inverters has flourished in Raxaul as there is high demand of inverters in Nepal due to load shedding. These inverters are not imported through the Birgunj Customs point.
