Hospital tense after woman's death post-delivery

BIRATNAGAR, Aug 23: The Koshi Zonal Hospital remained tense throughout the day on Friday after relatives of a pregnant woman, who died after delivering a baby, held demonstrations accusing the doctors of negligence.



Aajama Prabin, of Laxmipur in Siraha district, who underwent caesarian delivery on Thursday night died on Friday morning. After Aajama´s death, her relatives gathered the hospital and staged demonstrations demanding compensation and action against doctors.



According to Mohammad Sahabir, Aajama´s husband, his wife had complained of breathing difficulty on Thursday night after delivery. He claimed he had requested the hospital staff to call the doctor but no doctor was available to attend to patients at night. [break]



“I had requested the hospital staff to call the doctor but by the time the doctor arrived she breathed her last,” said Sahabir, who is police constable at District Police Office in Morang.



Service delivery in the hospital was also affected after Aajama´s relatives staged protests. District Police Office, Morang said the family members had not received the dead body until late Friday night. After the death of the patient, the irate relatives had also tried to manhandle Doctor Yogendra Mishra, who was involved in the delivery.

Meanwhile, Medical Superintendent Umakanta Jha denied any negligence on the part of doctors. According to Jha, Aajama had died of Pulmonary Embolism (PE). PE is a sudden blockage in a lung artery usually causing a blood clot in the leg which breaks loose and travels through the bloodstream to the lung.



A doctor, seeking anonymity informed that the patient showed PE symptom at around 2 am. “A group of four doctors were attending to the patient,” the doctor said. According to doctors, woman suffering from PE have only 20 percent chances of survival. Despite the mother´s death, the new born is said to be in a good health condition.
