KATHMANDU, Aug 27: A group of rights activists, journalists and professionals has strongly objected to the Maoist proposal to withdraw criminal cases allegedly committed by the rebel cadres during the insurgency.

“We condemn the Maoist party´s proposal to withdraw and cancel all court cases regarding crimes committed during the conflict, and to provide general amnesty to those who have been found guilty by the courts,” reads a press statement issued by the group that includes journalist Kanak Mani Dixit, rights activists Sushil Pyakurel and Mandira Sharma, and lawyer Tikaram Bhattarai, among others. In its peace proposal released Thursday, the UCPN (Maoist) had proposed withdrawal of criminal cases brought against the party.

“This proposal of the Maoist party goes against all national responsibilities under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the Interim Constitution and international humanitarian law,” reads the statement.
