Govt to import sugar from India

KATHMANDU, Aug. 7: The Government is to import sugar from neighboring India in order to maintain a balance between demand and supply in the Nepali market.



Speaking at a program held at the Ministry of Finance, Commerce and Supplies Secretary Lalmani Joshi said the import is being made in order to regularize the market and address the increasing demand of the consumers.



The country would need 2.2 million quintals of sugar for the current fiscal year, but the domestic production is only 1.4 million quintal. The Government is importing 150,000 quintals of sugar from India.



In the previous fiscal year, the Government had sold 300,000 quintals of sugar and target to sell around 500,000 quintals this year.
