Govt plan on squatters irks Kirtipur ocals

KIRTIPUR, June 20: Locals of Kirtipur Municipality have decided to wage struggle against the government plan to shift the landless squatters, displaced from the Bagmati River bank, to ward no. 14 and 17 at Sundarighat.



The locals would protest the government move to shift the squatters in the site which is being used for the locals’ last rites, according to Sundarighat Cemetery Protection Society, Ramesh Maharjan.[break]



Earlier, the government’s effort to shift the squatters on the premises of Himal Cement Factory had also turned unsuccessful following the locals’ protest.



Maharjan said Sundarighat is also the site of archeological importance and the locals have been conserving the site for long. The area spreads over 25 ropanis of land with different historical temples and monasteries.
