KATHMANDU, March 31: A private company has submitted a proposal to the government to operate 200 motorcycle taxis and offer public transport services at a rate cheaper than other taxis in the capital.

Motax Pvt Ltd which has been registered at Company Registrar Office (CRO) in Kathmandu last year, has submitted the business plan at the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) seeking permission to operate the service. [break]

“We have approached the DoTM with our business plan for taxi services which has been successful in various countries due to its cheaper fare and traffic-friendly makeup, especially in congested roads like Kathmandu,” Shiv Narayan Yadav, executive director of the company told myrepublica.com on Tuesday.

The company has submitted the business plan twice at the DoTM for permission to run the service since it was registered at CRO on June, 2009.

As it is entirely a new concept in Nepal, the CRO has registered the company under the ´other´ modes of transport.

“We come up with the idea to run the service for the first time in Nepal. However it has already been successful in various countries, including France, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Cambodia and the UK as reliable mode of public transport,” said Yadav, who has already worked as an engineer for Bouygues Batiment International of France. Yadav claimed that the company would offer motorcycle taxi services for a fare cheaper by one-third in comparison to the fare charged by existing four wheelers.

“We are investing Rs 50 million to run the company and will add up to 200 more taxis depending on the demands,” he added.

The company has also set a plan to hire college students as part time drivers in addition to full time drivers.

Babu Ram Acharya, secretary at the Ministry of Labor and Transport Management (MoLTM) said the DoTM is studying the proposal and has also sent the proposal to Valley Traffic Office for necessary feedback in this regard.

“We are positive toward the proposal. We have sought feedback from the traffic police as it is related to traffic management. We will decide whether to grant permission once we receive the response from the traffic police,” said Acharya.
