KATHMANDU, Sept 9: The Ministry of Local Development (MoLD) has introduced measures to check corruption in the local bodies which have remained without elected representatives for decades now.

Deputy Prime Minister Narayankaji Shrestha, who also heads the local development ministry, has himself taken initiatives to punish officials involved in corruption.[break]

Speaking at an interaction with media persons, Shrestha said a team from the local development ministry, which recently carried out an inspection in three districts -- Dhanusha, Mahottari and Siraha -has already suspended officials in August for involvement in irregularities.

The ministry has also sought clarification from 10 VDC secretaries with regard to irregularities in the social security fund.

The government had allocated Rs 44 billion to the local development ministry this year.

The ministry during its inspection found that VDC secretaries have not distributed social security allowance in their areas for the last five years.

The ministry also plans to soon carry out inspection in other districts including Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Sarlahi that have earned a disrepute for massive corruption, said minister Shrestha.
