A senior official of GDB told Republica that they were in the process of managing funds to pay their depositors. “If everything goes fine, we will resume operation of the counter from Sunday,” the official said, adding that the bank on Tuesday recovered loan amounting to Rs 20 million from deprived sector.
“We were compelled to close down the counter at Putalisadak after we received complaints from our depositors from other parts of the country,” the official added.
He said the bank would start paying its depositors if it managed to collect at least Rs 70 million by the end of this week.
Although the central bank allows GDB to make payment up to Rs 500,000, the bank had slashed the withdrawal limit to Rs 100,000 on Friday and Rs 50,000 on Sunday.
The central bank has requested the GDB depositors not to panic, assuring them that their money was safe and that the financial health of the bank was not that bad.
