KATHMANDU, Aug 3: Swimmer Gaurkia Singh on Monday set a new national record in women's 100 m backstroke during heats round of the 16th FINA World Championship being held in Kazan, Russia.

The 13-year old finished the distance in 1 minute 8.12 seconds to better her previous mark of 1 minute 13.13 seconds set during 20th Open National and Age Group Swimming Competition held in June in the capital.
Though Gaurika secured first position in the heat 1 among six competitors, she came 58th in overall out of 66 participants. She finished 9.34 seconds behind Hungary's Katinka Hosszu, the top finisher of the heats who completed the distance in 58.78 seconds.
