FWEAN urges greater role for women entrepreneurs

KATHMANDU, Oct 25: The two-day gathering of Federation of Woman Entrepreneurs´ Associations of Nepal (FWEAN) concluded on Friday deciding to put pressure on the government to formulate programs to economically empower women and support their entrepreneurship.



The National Consultation Workshop and 10th Annual General Meeting of FWEAN had kicked off on Thursday.

“We have decided to urge the government to amend existing laws and formulate new laws to empower women entrepreneurs,” FWEAN´s newly elected president Reeta Bhandari said.

The gathering also sought the government´s support in introducing new technology in women-run enterprises so as to enhance the competitiveness of their products in international markets.



Bhandari also expressed commitment to create environment where woman entrepreneurs will get equal access to finance and ownership in property at par with their male counterparts.



Speaking at the gathering, Krishna Gyawali, secretary at the Ministry of Industry (MoI), said the government had taken the issues raised by woman entrepreneurs seriously. “We are committed to propose laws that will pave the way for greater role of women in economic activities” said Gyawali.



Chhaya Sharma, immediate past president of FWEAN, highlighted the role of women entrepreneurs in economic activities in the country. “No one can under-estimate our increasing role in domestic as well as foreign trade promotion. We are committed to expand our in the coming days with the support of the government,” she added.



Three entrepreneurs felicitated


On the occasion three woman entrepreneurs from different segments were felicitated.

Shova Gyawali, director of Nepal Republic Media, was felicitated as the best woman publisher, Nikita Poudel, chairperson of Gopi Krishna Movies Pvt Ltd as the best woman entrepreneur in the entertainment sector, and Mili Shrestha, an IT entrepreneur, as the best woman IT entrepreneur.



New executive committee


The 10th AGM also elected a new executive committee led by Reeta Bhandari for a three-year term.

Bhawani Rana has been as senior vice president while Sharada Rijal and Rita Singh were elected vice-presidents. Similarly, Alka Rijal was appointed the executive director of the federation.



Hajuri Bista and Niru Rayamajhi were elected treasurer and secretary respectively.

Similarly, Shova Gyawali, Darshana Shrestha, Sunita Vaidya, Maya Gurung, Sumitra Palanchoke, Shila Nepali, Basanti Pradhan, Ramala Pokharel, Saraswati Parajuli, Reetu Vaidya, Manisha Ghimire, Sarojani Sherchan and Mahalaxmi Shrestha have been elected as executive members.
