KATHMANDU, Aug 25: Speaker Subas Nembang on Thursday suspended four lawmakers -- Chandra Bahadur Gurung, Ram Narayan Singh, Kunti Shahi and Babina Moktan -- from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party - Nepal (RPP-N) for a day as they continuously shouted slogans at the parliament meeting despite repeated requests from the speaker not to do so.

“The four lawmakers have been suspended and I order the marshals to usher them respectfully outside the hall,” Nembang announced and resumed the meeting. [break]

The RPP-N has been objecting to parliament´s decision to end the 240-year old monarchy and declaring the country secular. It has been demanding a referendum on the two issues.

Earlier, the speaker had suspended four lawmakers from other smaller political parties for seven days for hindering parliament proceedings.

The parliamentary regulations have authorized the speaker to suspend for 10 days at the most any lawmaker for violating discipline or creating disorder in parliament.
