Four-member group of lawmakers to head out into the affected districts

KATHMANDU, May 14: The National Disaster Management Monitoring and Instruction Special Committee formed by the parliament on Thursday took the decision to mobilize a parliamentary group to the 14 districts affected by the calamitous earthquake.

The committee's first meeting took the decision to deploy a four-member group to districts of Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha, Ramechap, Sindhuli, Makawanpur, Gorkha, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Dhading, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Lamjung and Kavrepalanchowk, where the government has declared an emergency in the aftermath of the quake. The inspection tour will take place from May 15 to June 29.The committee has also arranged for a direct help line and email for receiving complaints from quake victims in the affected districts.

Constituent Assembly Chairman Subas Nembang, who chaired the committee meeting, said the lawmakers would ask for factual details if relief materials arriving for the victims had reached the intended target.

"The meeting has issued instruction to all the parliamentary parties of the parties represented in the parliament to mobilize lawmakers of the unaffected areas to the affected areas," Nembang said adding, "We are confident the lawmakers would make important contribution to rehabilitation and reconstruction tasks."

The lawmakers, who will not be undertaking the task of monitoring the efforts in the district, will join the committees formed by the government to take active participation in the relief and rescue work. The group to be deployed from the committee has been given five days to come up with an assessment report. The group will also include employees of the Parliamentary Secretariat.

In the meeting, Nepali Congress Vice President and committee's member Ram Chandra Poudel appealed for a better settlement of the quake victims in view of the incoming monsoon season, and streamlining the management of running the schools and health posts in the post quake scenario. "Justice has not been delivered as the exact number of the quake victims is yet to be ascertained, but a group with technicians must be sent to collect the data at the earliest," he said.

On the occasion, CPN (UML) leader Madhav Kumar Nepal underscored the need for formation of the National Crisis Management Council to contribute in mitigating the danger.

Likewise, UCPN (Maoist) General Secretary Krishna Bahadur Mahara stressed for a perusal of the archive on the activities relating to the quake victims to draw out necessary instruction and carrying out the monitoring work.

Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal Chairman Kamal Thapa said the government must be pressed into formulating a working plan within the next five days as to how, when, who and where the quake victims' need to be helped, and monitor the work. RSS
