Rayamajhi, who was discharged from Himalaya Hospital, Chaarkhal on Friday, breathed his last at his residence Monday evening. He was taken home after his frailing health condition showed a gradual improvement.
Rayamajhi had played important role to establish communist party in Nepal. Elected as General Secretary of Communist Party of Nepal through the second general convention of the party in 2014 BS, he had supported royal takeover staged by then king Mahendra in 2017 BS, dismissing the elected government led by late B P Koirala.[break]
As his party expelled him a year later over his decision to support the royal takeover, Rayamajhi formed a separate party CPN (Rayamajhi). He had actively taken part in favor of improved Panchayati system during the referendum in 1980 to choose whether democratic system was required in the country.
Rayamajhi joined interim cabinet under late Nepali Congress (NC) leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai after the success of people´s movement in 1990. King Birendra later appointed him Chairman of Rajparishad Standing Committee.
Chairman of CPN-ML C P Mainali recalled him as true nationalist and a patriotic leader. “He always advocated Nepal should not be dictated by any foreign forces. He was in favor of democracy or communism with monarchy in Nepal,” said Mainali.
