According to Karki, he joined the UCPN-Maoist in 2006 and became the member of the Maoist Kathmandu District Committee in 2008, but is currently in hiding after being threatened by the Maoists for quitting the party. [break]
“The constitution guarantees the inalienable right of individuals to freely join any political party, which cannot be prevented by any political party,” states Karki who hails from Bayarban VDC, Morang and has been staying in his rented room in Kalanki of Kathmandu.
Karki said he was first kidnapped by a group led by Maoist constituency-1 in-charge in Kathmandu Kamala Thamsuhang on March 22 when he was preparing to leave for a political program where he was to announce his defection to the UML.
“They came to my apartment in Kalanki and took me away to the Maoist YCL office of constituency-1 where I suffered mental and physical torture for three days,” Karki said.
Karki said he was forced to sign various blank papers including two checks for Rs 700,000 each to withdraw money deposited in the Bank of Asia. After he was released, he inquired about his money at the bank and found that Rs 700,000 has been withdrawn. “I have not been able to get back to my room due to security reasons,” said Karki.
He said that he plans to join the UML dissatisfied with the working style and strategy of UCPN-Maoist. He said that the money deposited in the bank account came from selling a small piece of land in Kathmandu. “If they suspect me of any irregularity, they should investigate into it. I need justice,” said Karki.
When asked to comment, YCL in-charge Ganeshman Pun said he is not aware about the incident. “I once heard that the party had taken action against one Karki on corruption charge. But I don´t know the details now,” he said.
