KATHMANDU, Sept 21: Prices of essential commodities have gone up in the market with the advent of major festive seasons.

According to retailers, the price of the lentils has gone up in range of Rs 5 to Rs 35 per kg, while rice, beater rice and sugar have become dearer by Rs 5 per kg each in comparison to prices recorded a month ago. Edible oil, too, has become costlier in range of Rs 5 to Rs 10 per liter.[break]

“Price of lentils is increasing day by day because its production season is over,” said Ganga Ram Maharjan, sales executive of Brown Rice and Health Foods at Indra Chowk.

Price of Chana dal has increased by a whopping Rs 35 per kg and is currently selling for Rs 110 per kg. Similarly, the price of Mung Chata has increased to Rs 130 per kg from Rs 120 per kg recorded a month ago. Mas dal has also become costlier by Rs 10 per kg and is currently selling for Rs 125 per kg.

However, there is no uniformity in the prices of food commodities in the market. “This is happening because of lack of appropriate market policy,” Maharjan said, adding that the government must provide incentives to farmers to increase production at local level and displace imports.

Price of food commodities has been increasing continuously over the past few months. “Among all the commodities, price of lentils has increased by as much as 30 percent,” said Hari Parajapati, sales executive of Manik Store at Indra Chowk.

The price of soybean oil has increased to Rs 125 per liter, while sunflower oil is currently selling for Rs 130 per liter.

“Price of edible oil is increasing because domestic mills have to import oil seeds from international market. Any change in prices of oil seeds in international market is reflected in the domestic market,” added Prajapati.

Similarly, the price of different varieties of beaten rice has increased by about Rs 5 per kg.
