Humla, Dolpa, Mugu, Bajura, Jajarkot and Rukum may face a serious food crisis this year as the government delayed to provide grant to the Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) for supplying food to the districts, General Manager of NFC Hari Narayan Saha said.[break]
This year, the government provided a grant of Rs 370 million to the NFC for ensuring food supplies to the remote districts but it was too late.
Saha said food crisis has already been witnessed due to the NFC´s failure to supply the food on time as the regular government budget was late by some days and the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies too delayed in releasing a grant of Rs 60 million to Corporation.
Every year, the NFC is provided with Rs 480 million including a grant of Rs 110 million from Government of Japan to meet food deficiency in the remote districts of the country.
But, the Japanese government provides rice for free (equivalent to Rs 110 million) for Nepal´s economic and social development under its foreign grant program.
Japan has already provided 77,000 quintals of rice to Nepal this year out of its commitment to providing 190,000 metric ton.
