KATHMANDU, Dec 5: De Cartoonz Crew of Kathmandu edged Eternal Crew of Pokhara in the finals of Himalayan International B-boys/B-girls Jatra held at St. Xavier School premises Saturday afternoon.

Da Pace Crew of Dharan, De Eternal Crew of Pokhara, Nock STD Crew of Swayambhu and Cartoonz Crew of Kathmandu had qualified for the final of the event organized by Nepal Breakdance Foundation (NBF) in association with the Rotary Club Nepal to mark the World AIDS day. [break]

“We have been practicing seven hours a day for two years for this day. Me and my friends dropped out from school and worked on this wholeheartedly because we wanted to become dancers in the future. Many of us didn’t have family support so we struggled on our own working at some restaurant to collect money,” shared Umesh Tamang from the Cartoonz.

“We had to win the championship today to prove to our parents that we have a future in this, to give a reward to whatever Mikki Dai (NBF Founder Krisada Kanjanawat) has done for us and also because of the effort we have put in,” Saroj Adhikari from the winning crew added.

The winners won tickets for the 2012 Asian qualifiers for BOTY (Battle of the Year, the worldwide renowned International B-boys/ B-girls Championship).

The De Eternal Crew of Pokhara claimed they choreographed on their own watching videos from YouTube.

They said they practiced for three hours daily managing school and homework to pursue their academic career while also fulfilling their passion for dancing.

“I believe youths are among the most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. I wanted the NBF to get involved in raising awareness about this issue because youths tend to be more attentive to messages when spread by people they can identify with,” NBF Founder Krisada Kanjanawat explained about the event.

“I always had a love for kids because they’re pure, not black or white, not judgmental. I wanted to feed them good things so that they could occupy themselves with it and stay away from tobacco, alcohol or drugs.

“Then I met this bunch of kids who were terrific dancers and had big dreams in their eyes, but financially incapable of training. So I decided to give them a platform for showcasing their talent,” he added.

The professional B-girls from I Dance of France and semifinalist B-girls from NBF captivated the audience with their spectacular moves before the finalists.
