Adding to that, the internet and social networking have brought a whole new dimension in the way people share photos.
The desire to learn the art of taking good photos is also growing as photos have become a part of our lifestyle. Recently, there have been several photography workshops with different themes and purpose in Kathmandu.
Sattya Media Arts Collective, Jawalakhel has come up with “Faces: A Portrait Photo Workshop” which will be on August 13 and 20.
The workshop will introduce participants to different types of portrait photography. Besides that, the workshop will also talk about using different features of a camera like using filter and lenses, depth of field, focal length and different lighting conditions.

“There are a lot of stories to be told in a country like ours, and portrait photography is certainly one of the most important mediums to share such stories with,” said Deepan Shrestha, intern at Sattya Media Arts Collective.
“This workshop intends to provide platform for people who are interested in photography,” said Deepan. “It’s for people who are already familiar with the basics of photography who want to upgrade their skills.”
Gorakh Bista, a professional photographer and filmmaker who is into adventure, aerial and wildlife photography, will be instructing the participants at the workshop.
“The instructor is originally from Humla who’s been involved in unique works of photography,” said Deepan, adding, “He’s been involved in aerial filmmaking which is very unique in Nepal. It’s a good opportunity to learn about photography from him.”
Bista’s recent works include photography and filmmaking of Fishtail Air, Everest Skydiving 2009, and Kala Patthar Cabinet Meeting of Government of Nepal in 2009.
Trophy Hunting, The Gateway: Simkot to Holy Kailash, Rights over the Life, The Fossils of Strikes and Followed by Snow are some of the documentaries he has worked on.
Bista has also worked in the upcoming movie The Blacksmith.
Participants must have their own digital SLR camera, or a point-and-shoot digital camera with manual shooting modes.
This workshop is targeted for people who are familiar with shooting in manual modes.
According to the organizers, there will also be a third session for the participants which will be finalized after the workshop begins.
A participant has to pay a fee of Rs 1,500 for the workshop.
The workshop will be conducted from 11 am to 3 pm.
