KATHMANDU, June 3: Even nearly a month after the massive flash flood in Seti River that swept away the entire settlement in Kharapani Bazzar of Kaski district, experts are still clueless about the reason behind the flood.

Speaking at an interaction in the capital on Sunday, climate change specialist Dr Arun Bhakta Shrestha said climate change could be the reason behind the untimely flood. [break]

“Despite a field visit we have not been able to pinpoint what triggered the flood. We have more than one hypothesis which can be approved or disapproved after a serious scientific study. We fear that it can also be due to the effects of climate change,” he said.

Similarly, remote sensing analyst Pradeep Mool who had accompanied Shrestha during the field visit also insisted for a proper scientific research on the matter. “The cause needs to be discovered soon so that prevention measures against similar incidents can be taken,” he said.

Meanwhile, secretary at the environment ministry Krishna Gyawali said the ministry is eager to support a competent research team in this regard. “We have certainly not been able to carry out timely and needful research related to climate change issues. But we seriously realize its importance,” he said.
