Envoy Schevchengko, who arrived in Kathmandu on Monday to present his credentials to President Ram Baran Yadav and inaugurate Ukraine´s Consular Office in Kathmandu, said there is a huge potential for the cooperation between Nepal and Ukraine in the field of trade, tourism, investment, education and infrastructure development. “There is a need of exchange visits by business delegation from both the countries on a regular basis. I have also talked to foreign ministry officials on the need of exchange visits of political leaders between the two countries,” he said.
The envoy, who is based in New Delhi, said Nepal and Ukraine have very good relations at UN and that Ukraine has always been supporting Nepal´s positions on different issues including on the concerns related to LDCs, LLDCs and Small Island Nations at various UN forums. “We do not have any problem in our relations. This can be further strengthened with exchange visits of business and political leaders,” he further said.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Nepal recognizing Ukraine as sovereign state after the collapse of former USSR in 1990.
Apart from becoming one of the popular destinations of Nepali students vying for medical and aeronautical engineering studies, Nepalese businessmen import various goods including helicopter parts, sunflower seeds and iron blades for manufacturing iron rods from Ukraine. Likewise, Nepal has been exporting leather goods, carpets and various handicraft items.
The envoy also said that Nepal could be one of the popular tourist destinations for Ukrainian tourists given the natural beauty with snow-capped mountains of Nepal being a major draw. “A large number of tourists from Ukraine visit India. They would also like to visit Nepal,” he said, adding that this requires regular interaction between the two countries at different levels.
