In a government notice published on Tuesday, it was notified that Macau, a special administrative region of China, will stop issuing on-arrival visas to nationals from Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Nigeria. Now onwards, Nepalis will have to apply for the visa at the Chinese Embassy. [break]
Although the notice is silent on the reason behind the move, the state-owned Macau Post reported that it is a move taken to control illegal immigrant workers and drug smuggling.
In February, the Bureau of Labor had informed that there were 1,814 Nepalis in Macau, mostly working as security guards. According to unofficial sources, more than 200 Nepalis are living in Macau illegally.
