KATHMANDU, Jan 13: The election process to select new leadership at the Nepali Congress Special General Convention formally began on Tuesday at Bhrikutimandap as negotiations between convention supporters and the party’s establishment faction failed to yield any results.
According to the Central Election Committee (CEC), participants of the Special Convention have started filing their candidacies for the office-bearers’ positions. Earlier, the CEC had published the final list of voters.

This came after the Special Convention formed a new election panel that includes Ashok Pokhrel, Gokarna Banjade, RC Bimal Paudel and Ramchandra Gautam.
Meanwhile, talks between supporters of the Special General Convention and leaders close to party President Sher Bahadur Deuba are underway in Lazimpat.
Special Convention supporters have demanded that Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka remain in office until the election and that party President Sher Bahadur Deuba be barred from using his signature in election-related matters. They have also demanded that President Deuba give up his intention to contest the House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5.
Among other things, the supporters have sought formal recognition of the Special General Convention and that the party leadership refrain from forming any kind of electoral alliance for the polls.
