CHITWAN, Dec 20: The dead body of an elderly couple of Gardi VDC -9 in Chitwan, who were killed in an attack by a wild elephant Dhurbe five days ago, could not be cremated on Wednesday as well.
Locals of Madi have said that they will not cremate the deceased couple unless the killer elephant is killed. They also closed down the district for four hours on Wednesday accusing the district administration of failing to kill the elephant. [break]
Following the strike, Chief Conservation Officer of Chitwan National Park Jhamak Bahadhur Karki and local political leaders held a meeting and agreed to provide Rs 300,000 in compensation to the family of the deceased.
They also urged the family members to cremate the deceased couple assuring additional Rs 700,000 in compensation from the government. They also agreed to provide employment to a member of the family in the national park.
However, the agitating locals of Madi turned down the offer and demanded that the elephant be killed immediately. “As nothing new came out of the discussion, we didn´t cremate the deceased,” said Jena Bota, an agitating local.
Members of the struggle committee formed by the agitating locals have agreed to hold talks with the district administration on Thursday.
Four people of Gardi VDC have lost their life till Saturday to the elephant attack. Officials of the national park said the elephant might also have killed locals in Bara and Parsa.
Nepal Army personnel and national park officials have been deployed on Monday to kill the elephant. But the team hasn´t been able to track down the elephant as of yet, said Karki.
