Those killed in the incident have been identified as Manoj Shrestha, 13, of Mahendranagar-9, Sunsari, Shailendra Chaudhary, 27, of Ekamba-5 and Shaiyab Miya, 15, of Mahadevapatti-6, Saptari. The bodies of two other men are yet to be identified. [break]
Thirty-one of the injured passengers are undergoing treatment at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), Dharan, 13 in Koshi Zonal Hospital, Biratnagar, and the rest in District Hospital, Inaruwa.
The bus (Me 1 Kha 912) that left Bahdrapur at 4:40 a.m. suddenly met with the accident at 8:30 in the morning. "I only remember the bus rolling over four times," said Ram Sewak Sahini of Darbhanga, a passenger from India who is receiving treatment in Inaruwa.
Driver Narayan Kharel said the bus went out of control after the shock absorbing plates broke down. The 32-seater bus was overcrowded and all those killed in the incident were traveling on the roof.
“I tried my best to prevent the accident but couldn´t,” Kharel, who himself went to the police to report the accident, rued. The police later went to the accident site and rescued the injured passengers, said Assistant Sub Inspector Dilli Katuwal.
Around 700-meter stretch of the highway is just 20-feet wide at that section affecting vehicular movement. Locals complained that the Department of Roads has not paid attention to widen the road despite several accidents at the same spot.
Motorcyclist killed
Meanwhile, a motorcyclist died on Friday night when a tanker hit him in Birgunj on Friday night.
The deceased has been identified as Ashok Adhikari, 40. Pillion rider Kamal Patel sustained minor injuries.
The relatives of the deceased obstructed the highway on Saturday morning, demanding compensation.
Truck-hit kills one
In Nawalparasi, one person died and three injured when a truck hit two buses at Dumkibas on Friday night.
Sadam Das, 35, of Motihari, India, died in the accident.
Cop dead in accident
A police constable was killed and 10 persons injured when a bus and truck collided at Portaha in Dhanusha along the East West Highway on Saturday.
Ram Avatar Mandal, 35, of Bhagwanpur-2, Saptari, who was posted at the Special Court, Kathmandu, was going home on holiday when the speeding night bus he was traveling on hit the truck after losing control.
Five of the injured are in critical condition, the police said.
