KATHMANDU, May 10: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has asked national and international drug manufacturing companies to donate essential medicines that are in short supply at the health facilities in quake-hit districts.

The Health Emergency Operation Center (HEOC) formed by the MoHP after the devastating earthquake, has published a list of 140 essential drugs on its website and asked the manufacturing companies to contribute the medicines. The request of the HEOC comes at a time when the health facilities across the country have been facing acute scarcity of essential drugs that, in normal times, are provided free of cost by the government.

"We have published the list of essential medicines that we need urgently," Dr Guna Raj Lohani, spokesperson at the MoHP, said.

The list includes medicines such as paracetamol, ibruprofen, metronidazole as well as medical devices, surgical accessories, X-Ray plates, among others.

"Members of national and international communities who wish to donate for the earthquake victims should donate medicines and other items listed by us," he informed.

According to Dr Lohani, the MoHP has also suspended the Public Procurement Act to ease the procurement of essential medicines. He informed that the concerned government agencies would have no hassles in procuring essential medicines. The MoHP has also instructed concerned agencies to purchase essential drugs immediately.
