Drug abusers on rise in Makwanpur

HETAUDA, Aug 29: The number of drug abusers is on the rise in the rural and urban areas in Makwanpur district.



Over 678 people are believed to sink into drug addiction in the district, said the District Police Office Makwanpur. Drug abusers here smuggle drugs from India and supply to Bharatpur, Pokhara, Nawalparasi, Gorkha, Bhairahawa as well.[break]



Drug abusers here are found consuming hashish, brown sugar, marijuana, cocaine and using injections.



Besides, the number of HIV-infected is increasing day by day in the district. Some 230 HIV-infected have been identified in the district. Of them, 70 are women and 25 children. So far, 135 HIV patients died in the district.



Following flourishing drug addiction in the district, the District Development Committee Makwanpur has launched a campaign aimed at motivating drug abusers to give up their habit and get involved in income generating works like mushroom farming, poultry farming, vegetable faming and the business of repairing of electronic devices, said DDC Information Officer Ajaya Bartaula.
