DHARAN, Jan 21: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar on Monday floated the idea of introducing a law that bans protests and shutdowns at factories and industries.

“Activities like strikes and protest programs should come to an end immediately at industrial units to ensure economic development of the country,” said Gachchhadar, addressing the 32nd Annual General Meeting of the Sunsari Chamber of Commerce and Industry. [break]“In this regard, a strict law that bars any form of protest at factories and industries should be introduced.”

Stating democracy does not refer to freedom to infringe on others´ rights, he said Nepalis should be more civilized. “Even the US and European countries are democratic countries, but people there are not as rowdy,” Gachchhadar said.

Kush Kumar Joshi, immediate past president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), said increasing incidents of extortion in the pretext of raising funds for political parties have threatened the business community.

“Threats issued by political cadres to businessmen and warnings to cause damage to properties in case of failure to make so-called donations have instilled fear in the business community,” he said. “Strict action should be taken against such people in spite of their affiliation to political parties.”
