Dozen inmates injured in brawl

CHITWAN, Nov 30: A dozen inmates at the regional jail in Bhimphedi, Makawanpur were injured on Wednesday following a brawl over making telephone calls.



Inmates Danny Lama, Tashi Lama, Sagun Shrestha and their friends would talk for more than the stipulated 15 minutes and also charge others for making calls. The clash ensued after other inmates opposed them and the two groups traded blows.[break]



Islok Lama of Hatiya, and Raju Lama, Ganga Thing, Ananda Syangtan and Raj Kumar Moktan of Manahari have been seriously injured in the brawl. Shailendra Adhikari, Suresh Pariyar and Shamsher Ansari of Makawanpur, Bijaya Adhikari of Sarlahi and others have also sustained injuries. Makawanpur Police said the injured inmates are being treated at Hetauda Hospital.



“Most of them have sustained head injuries,” Chief of Makawanpur Police Shyam Khadka said. Khadka said the inmates are allowed to talk for up to 15 minutes every day. “The clash ensued after the stronger group declared that they would talk for more than the stipulated 15 minutes,” Khadka explained.



The chief district officer and the police chief reached the jail after the incident to take the situation under control. Jailer Purushottam Humagain said 36 additional policemen have been deployed at the jail to beef up security. There are 278 convicts in the Bhimphedi Jail that was made a regional jail recently.
