Traders said around 30 truckloads of bananas are arriving everyday from Tarai districts, including Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi. Till last week, around 10 truckloads of bananas used to arrive in the capital per day. [break]
“Now the capital´s fruit market have been flooded with Malbhog and Singaporian bananas since the last few days,” Rudra Pathak, general secretary of Nepal Federation of Fruits and Vegetables Suppliers told myrepublica.com.
Fruits wholesale market at Kuleshwar is dominated by abundant supplies of bananas dragging down the price of bananas. Traders said wholesale price of banana per dozen has dropped to Rs 35 from Rs 45 per dozen a week ago.
“Transaction volume of bananas has covered more than 60 percent of total transaction at Kuleshwar market,” said Pathak.
With the onset of new harvesting season, Indian green apples have begun to arrive in Nepali market from this week ending the dominance of Chinese apples. “Arrivals of Indian applies will continue for the next couple of months,” said Pathak.
However, supply of domestic apples and Indian apples in the Nepali market are seasonal. Papaya is another fruit that is being imported from India.
Traders said over two or three truck loads of papayas have been entering the capital every day, up from one or two trucks per day a couple of weeks back. Soaring supplies of papaya has pushed down the price of papayas to Rs 40 per kg from Rs 45 per kg over two weeks ago.
Similarly, price of mangoes also dropped to Rs 55 per kg from Rs 60 per kg a week ago. However, lime, pomegranate, water melon, pineapple and jackfruits are selling for higher prices as compared to the price recorded last week.
