KATHMANDU, April 15: For two years, Priya Thapa (name changed) didn't enjoy meeting friends or going out. She would stay alone in her room and never contact anyone. Twenty six years old Thapa, barely attended her classes and missed most of her lectures.

Her relatives, friends as well as teachers were worried about the change in her behavior and suggested to her to consult doctors. "I failed in exams and lost interest in studies. I didn't care about my poor marks or my strange behavior," She said. After several months of her quiet suffering, one of her friend talked to her about her condition. She didn't listen to her at first, but later heeded her suggestion and visited a psychiatrist. She was diagnosed with clinical depression.

Her doctor played a major role in her recovery, "My doctor helped me a lot during those days. He not only provided me with proper treatment, but made sure that I was doing fine. He closely monitored me, and helped me get better" she said

During her treatment, she also learnt yoga and exercises that helped in her recovery. After a few months, she stopped taking medicines as per her psychiatrist's suggestion.

Many youths like Thapa are suffering from depression. Twenty-three years old Anil Regmi (name changed) is also among them. Anil, suffered from depression shortly after failing in his exams. "After I failed in the exams, I felt worthless. I would confine myself to my room and skip college."

For a few months, Regmi turned to alcohol as an escape. "I didn't know what else to do, I spent all my money in alcohol. I failed not only me, but my parents also," he said.

Then he suffered from insomnia. "I didn't eat or slept well for months". As his condition worsened, he would not talk to anyone.

One day his mother took him to see a psychiatrist where he was diagnosed with clinical depression. After receiving treatment for several months, he is now recovering.

Dr Thasineku Sumana, a mental health doctor, explains that dissatisfaction is one of the major causes for depression among the youth. "When people are dissatisfied with themselves for a long time, they could go into depression. And depression could become chronic if not treated on time". She explains that stress, or overthinking any situation can lead people to depression.

"Carefree people are less likely to suffer from depression while people who overthink every little situation suffer from depression."

Dr Sumana, further explained that yoga and healthy lifestyle can help lower the chances of depression.

"Exercises including yoga or meditation are effective in curing depression," she said. Apart from physical and mental exercises, support from family and peaceful home environment also help people recover from depression, according to Dr Sumana.
