Dispute persist over integration modality, numbers

KATHMANDU, Jan 30: A meeting of top leaders of the big three parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML--ended inconclusively on Saturday and there was no agreement on key issues including modality for integration of Maoist combatants into security agencies and the numbers involved.



The parties, however, decided to meet again Monday to seek consensus on contentious issues including formation of the new government.[break]



Talking to media after the meeting, Home Minister Bhim Rawal, a member of the taskforce formed to settle differences that surface during integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants, said they reported the agreement reached during the taskforce meeting on Friday to the top leaders. "There has been agreement to sit for another round of talks at the level of top leaders, with a view to settling the other remaining issues as well," he said.



Rawal said the next meeting will deal with the issue of new government formation and power sharing also. "The meeting has concluded that formation of a new government is also equally important. We will try our level best to form a national consensus government," he added.



Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Barsha Man Pun, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala, Dr Ram Sharan Mahat and Krishna Prasad Sitaula, UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal, and General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and Home Minister Rawal attended the meeting.



The meeting of top leaders from the big three parties did not last long as Maoist Chairman Dahal was scheduled to fly to Biratnagar.



Maoist leader Pun, also a member of the taskforce from the Maoists, told media that the meeting ended on a positive note. "There has been agreement to forge consensus on the basis of the agreement reached at the taskforce," he further said.



He declined to divulge further details as there has been an agreement not to publicize the issue before arriving at a consensus. "We have held discussions on all issues including peace process, army integration, creating a trustworthy environment and power sharing," he added.
