Discovering herself is what Prakriti Maharjan is doing

KATHMANDU, June 13: The shy and quiet 16-year-old needs a little bit of prodding before she opens up. Waiting for her SLC results, Prakriti Maharjan has spent the last two months honing her skills on the keyboard in a music class.

Having played the keyboard for two years in different programs in her school, Little Angels’ School, she decided to work on it rather than learn something new.[break]

Prakriti wants to be a mechanical engineer, but she’s keeping her options open and might study medicine. Preferring to stay at home rather than go out, Prakriti says how the Newar dress, especially the Haku Patasi, and the Chhoila meat dish are her favorite things from her culture.

Can you tell us which advice has affected you in a positive way?

My cousin once explained to me how life is full of ups and downs. She said that mistakes happen but one should learn from them. Life goes on. Accept that and move on.

Do you take inspiration from anyone?

I remember reading a biography of Florence Nightingale when I was younger. For sometime I even wanted to become a nurse, just like her. Maybe that’s where I developed my interest in social work. Though I’m only 16 (the cutoff age is 18) I’m now a guest member of the Rotaract Club of Lalitpur.

Have you learnt anything important from your time there?

In our club, we’re involved in many activities. Just a few days ago, we had a program on Pap smear. If I wasn’t involved with the Club, I wouldn’t have learnt about its importance. We also had an event to mark the Newar New Year. Through this event, we, the Newar youth, want to preserve and promote our culture.

Last October, we visited an orphanage in Balaju where I learnt that not only is there joy in receiving but in giving as well. I think through my involvement with the Club, I have not only grown confident and learnt how to speak in public, but I have also grown to be deeply interested in social work. I would like to see myself continuing with social work in the future.
