“The country will not reach a logical conclusion without drafting the new constitution,” Khanal said speaking at the inaugural function of the party´s 5th Sunsari District Convention. “Only a new constitution will help the country march on the path of progress. Else, there will be bloodshed.”
The UML chief reiterated the need of consensus. “This is not the time to squabble with one another,” he said. “Our party is ready to give up anything. National consensus is not a far cry if other parties do likewise.”
Khanal criticized the Maoists for engaging in irrelevant agitations. “The Maoists should step forward through consensus instead of launching street protests,” he said. “We should be united for consensus, brushing aside all differences.”

Khanal warned people against unpolitical activities being carried out by ultra-leftist and rightist forces. “We should be alert against them,” he said.
Conceding weaknesses within the party, he warned ´some undisciplined leaders´ of stringent action. “Some party leaders have publicly expressed themselves against the party line,” he said. “I will take action against them after discussing this at the central committee.” But he did not pinpoint any leader.
Speaking briefly to journalists before flagging off the convention, Khanal said that the present political deadlock should be resolved from within the country. “We should seek a consensus in Kantipur (Kathmandu), not in Singapore or Hastinapur (a city in the Mahabharat epic),” Khanal said.
He expressed hope of seeing the budget passed by the legislature-parliament through consensus within a weak. “There is no alternative to consensus,” he said.
