Dinesh Thapaliya, spokesperson at MoLD said Department of Local Infrastructure Development and Agricultural Roads (DoLIDAR), under MoLD, had drawn up plans to produce a digital map within the end of fiscal year 2012/13 and will provide detailed information of rural and urban roads. [break]
Stating that there are duplications in road investment, Thapaliya said, “Once we have digital map, it will help bring unity in the investment,” adding, “The digitized map will also set clear right to way which sets precise distance that must be left vacant for future road expansion.”
The District Development Committees across the nation have started recording road data and information via Global Positioning System (GPS) machines from last year.
Once the DDCs collect the data of rural and urban road, we will put the information under Geographical Information System, said Bharat Shakya, section officer at Ministry of Local Development.
He informed that the information will be categorized as per the District Transport Master Plan. Shakya also opined that the digital map will be useful for planning in road sector.
The ministry had distributed 75 GPS machines, one each in 75 districts and trained the technical staff at respective DDCs to use them. Likewise, the ministry is all set to issue tender for additional 21 GPS machines. In the meantime, the ministry has initiated steps to produce an official record on road. The latter has been collecting data of both urban and rural roads. The ministry will be publishing the official record of road within the end of current fiscal year.
