Farmers in the district exported vegetables like tomato, cabbage, cauliflower and yam among others through around two dozen collection centers to neighboring districts as well as to India and Bangladesh.[break]
Traders mainly procure vegetables from collection centers in Jorpati, Guthitar, Okhre, Kanyakumari, Rudrabari, Kagate, Mulghat, Rajarani, Dadhabazzar, Hile and Pakhribas.
Nanda Kishwor Adhikari, technical assistant of District Agriculture Development Office, said the district exported tomatoes worth Rs 372.3 million. Similarly, it exported Aakbare chilly worth Rs 18.3 million, cabbage worth Rs 137.5 million, cauliflower worth Rs 90 million and ginger worth Rs 30 million. Export of other vegetables amounted to Rs 150 million during the review year.
Sidhuwa Multipurpose Cooperatives (SMC) of Parewadevi VDC alone sold around Rs 200 million worth of vegetables items like cabbages, cauliflowers, beans, radishes, carrots, green peas and green chilly in 2011/12.
Mehendra Gurung, coordinator of SMC, said vegetable exports from Parewadevi VDC increased by Rs 3 million during the review year compared to the previous fiscal year.
An average of around 40 truck-loads of vegetables leave the districts every day to markets in neighboring districts and to India and Bangladesh through different customs points in Morang and Jhapa.
Sidhuwa Multipurpose Cooperatives is one of the largest farmers´ cooperatives in the district.
