Defending champions Golden Gate in QF

KATHMANDU, July 24: Defending champions Golden Gate stormed into the quarterfinals of the Morgan Cup Ninth Men´s National Basketball Tournament after winning three consecutive matches.



Golden Gate, slated in Group ´A´ of the tournament, thrashed Xavier International 101-63 at the National Sports Council Covered Hall on Saturday as Bipendra Maharjan top scored with 29 points. Golden Gate took the massive lead in the first quarter with 31-13 and dominated the rest of the three 22-19, 20-18, 28-13. [break]



Prime, Pentagon and Naya Bazaar won their respective matches on Saturday in the tournament organized by Nepal Basketball Association.



Prime defeated Nepal Army 67-49. Prime maintained a wide gap in the first quarter with a score of 21-8. Army tried for a comeback in the second quarter scoring equal 10 points of Prime but they failed in the third and fourth quarters -- 16-14 and 20-17 respectively. Army man Dilli Pudasaini (22 points) was the highest scorer in the match but his attempts could not resist Prime.



Pentagon eased past Nava Jyoti 96-42 as the quarterly scores progressed 29-13, 26-10, 20-8 and 21-11 respectively.







Naya Bazaar completed a roller-coaster ride to beat Saipal 68-58. Saipal left Naya Bazaar eight points behind in the first quarter as it ended 6-14. However, Naya Bazaar made a comeback in the second quarter with 21-11 and leveled the third at 17-17. Naya Bazaar kept their cool in the final quarter and scored 24 points against Saipal´s 16 to snatch the victory.
