The sign language play by 18 deaf volunteer artistes from Nepal and the UK was a part of an international exchange aimed to strengthen cultural links between the UK and Nepal. [break]
The theme of the play was ´Atirikta yatra´ (extra journey). The play talked about the problems and successes faced by a Nepali deaf girl throughout her life. The one-hour-ten-minutes-long play was directed by Krishna Shah Yatri, a veteran theater artiste.
The play tells the story of Riya, a deaf girl who is born and raised in a rural village of Nepal. Attending the local school where the rest of the students are able, she finds it difficult to understand the language at the school.
Making her condition worse, she has to do the household chores as per the wishes of her father. However, her desire to study is facilitated when her uncle from town offers her to come and study in a deaf school in the town.
Her story continues as she does very well in the deaf school and hence gets the opportunity to go to the UK to continue her further studies in fine arts with a scholarship. In the UK, she and Mike, an able man, like each other and get married with the consent of both of their parents.
Realizing the need to do something for the deaf community in Nepal, she returns home with Mike and continues her commendable job in the field of deaf and fine arts.
