Dahal at a meeting of the top leaders of three major political parties in Singha Durbar on Tuesday said he was not able to give continuity in the subcommittee as he was busy in his party´s activities and other political affairs.[break]
But leaders from other parties said the subcommittee was not mandated to make any changes in its members, especially in the midst of its extended tenure.
The Constitutional Committee (CC) -- which is mandated to settle the disputes and prepare an integrated draft of the new constitution by incorporating thematic drafts -- under the Constituent Assembly (CA) formed the subcommittee with a view to expedite its works.
The CC recently extended the subcommittee´s term for 15 days as it couldn´t accomplish the tasks within the given timeframe.
“The CC extended the tenure of the subcommittee without making any changes. If we want to make any readjustment we must go to the CC,” a leader quoted Nepali Congress (NC) leader Bimalendra Nidhi as saying at the meeting.
Dahal had then proposed at the meeting to activate the team of the second-rank leaders for the purpose. But NC leader Ramesh Lekhak said the idea wouldn´t work.
“Discussion among the second-rank leaders would merely remain an academic debate on the matter. Involvement of top leaders is a must to settle key issues of the statute drafting,” said Lekhak.
The leaders have agreed to hold the next round of meeting on Wednesday morning for the same purpose.
Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, Surendra Pandey and Agni Kharel from CPN-UML, Dahal, Narayankaji Shrestha and Dev Gurung from UCPN (Maoist) and Ram Chandra Paudel, Nidhi, Ramesh Lekhak and Radheshyam Adhikari from the NC, were present at the meeting. Likewise, Speaker Subas Nembang, Deputy Speaker Purna Kumari Subedi and CC Chairman Nilambar Acharya were also at the meeting.
Former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, who is also member of the subcommittee, is also scheduled to attend the meeting Wednesday.
