KATHMANDU, Aug 3: UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Wednesday reiterated that he would leave no stone unturned to take the ongoing peace process to a logical end.

Speaking at an interaction organized by Nepali Congress Morang-Kathmandu liaison committee in the capital, Chairman Dahal also sought support from political parties and the people in his efforts to conclude the peace process. “I have already moved ahead. I need support from all of you,” said Dahal. [break]

Dahal claimed he had to face problems from various quarters in the past while trying to expedite the task of concluding the peace process and constitution drafting.

“The central committee of our party has decided to conclude the peace process. The Maoists will now fulfill their historic responsibility of concluding the peace process,” he said.

Stating that the party has already decided to agree on the formation of a directorate under Nepal Army for integration of the Maoist combatants and end dual security being provided to senior leaders of the party, Dahal said they have already made significant progress in the peace process. “We have already endorsed a work plan to conclude the peace process. In communist parties, endorsement of the work plan means the implementation phase of a task.”

Dahal refuted UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal´s allegation that YCL was still involved in criminal activities. “YCL does not exist. There is instead a terror of Parshuram Basnet [Youth Force in-charge of Morang] in the country these days.”

In a separate context, Dahal also argued that Madhesi parties alone are not the savior of Madhesi people. Tarai Madhesi Democratic Party (TMDP) Chairman Mahantha Thakur has accused the three major parties of being indifferent toward the issues of Madhes.

Speaking on the occasion, NC President Sushil Koirala urged Maoist Chairman Dahal to fulfill the historic responsibility of concluding the peace process.

Koirala recalled the conversation late Girija Prasad Koirala had with Maoist Chairman when the former had asked Dahal to conclude the peace process in his absence. “Girija Prasad Koirala initiated the peace process. Now you take the responsibility of concluding the peace process,” he further said.

Meanwhile, senior UML leader Nepal accused the Maoists of failing to implement various agreements reached in the past. He said that peace process can not be concluded unless Maoists show sincerity toward the past agreements. “CPN-UML does not have its own army. We have also not seized any property. Nor do we have YCL. The Maoists, therefore, must conclude the peace process at the earliest,” he further said.

Likewise, TMDP Chairman Thakur claimed that parties had forgotten the contribution made by late Girija Prasad Koirala. He argued that parties have failed to expedite the peace process and constitution drafting even as all powers now rest with the Constituent Assembly. “This is largely because the parties remain divided,” he said.

Thakur also maintained that the constitution drafting and peace process can not be concluded without addressing the genuine concerns of Madhesi people.
