Very often, when I think of the reasons behind the development of Nepal, I see many circumstances behind it, not only because of the lack of education but the mind set up since childhood of an individual born as a Nepali citizen. Every Nepali youth I have been in touch with talks about doing incredible work for the country and their extreme dislike to the Nepalese leaders can clearly be seen but until and unless some action is taken against it, nothing is going to change. If corruption exists in the system, we are all to be blamed for it because we are the ones who are fueling it.
Whenever the government announces a welfare or developmental scheme, the presence of some greedy politicians and bureaucrats are always found and they always find out ways to switch the sanctioned amount in the many loopholes. Such an attitude among the leaders seem to be responsible for many social evils like child labor, bonded labor, poverty, unemployment, etc. In Nepal, politics is a rewarding profession to earn money easily without much effort. The political corruption is also found prevalent in promotions of Police officials to the civil servants, new appointments, sanctioning tenders for constructing the developmental projects, expanding business activities or any financial activity for that matter.
Corruption is not merely the hundred rupees note that you give to a traffic police who catches you for not having a license or breaking the traffic signals, or the thousand rupees note that you hand over to a civil servant to get your work done in a fast track lane. Corruption is an easy way out but it’s wrong.
Nepal will go on as ever, come what may, is the rationalization made by the people. In my eyes, the main reason for Nepal being corrupted is the political instability, lawlessness, nepotism and lack of accountability prevailing in the society.
Some ask, haven´t we survived for decades like this? The answer is yes, we have survived for decades. In our country many cases of corruption have been exposed time and again but there are one thousand more that go undetected.
If the country is to look for the solutions, it should begin at the tertiary level by teaching the offspring that being rich with money is not everything but necessary to satisfy our wants. Thus, children should be made conscious of importance of moral values and discipline in life. In a democratic country like Nepal, people should play an important role for creating a better society rather than blaming the government for social evils.
Nepal can develop too, it can be a dream but not impossible as there are ample of opportunities hidden in our country, which foreigners are able to see but not us We need to explore and stop relying on others for help to meet our self interests. It’s the duty of every Nepali citizen to bring them in track or if necessary throw them out just like the monarchy who was abolished in the interest of the Nepali people and WE CAN ALL DO IT!
