The far-western town has been witnessing protests for the past four days by students and other people demanding establishment of a regional university. The fresh curfew was clamped after the situation remained tense due to a clash between police and agitators throughout Thursday. Many students were injured in the clash.
The protests have not subsided despite a government decision on Wednesday to establish a university in the far-western region. The situation deteriorated on Thursday after Maoists started to beat up protesting students in different parts of the town.
The Maoists also demonstrated against media Thursday evening. They chanted slogans against Mahakali FM and Abhiyan Daily, accusing them of broadcasting and writing news against them. They have also allegedly threatened the media.
