KATHMANDU, Jan 4: An armed group of about 10 persons belonging to CPN-Maoist barged into the corporate office of Nepal Derivative Exchange (NDEX) at Tinkune this morning and vandalized its property and destroyed important documents. The group also looted a BlackBerry mobile set.

According to NDEX, the group had been demanding the derivative and commodity exchange market to pay hefty amount as donation. “All the members of the group were wearing masks. They took our security guard and staff members under control before vandalizing the office," NDEX said, issuing a statement later on the day.[break]

The group scattered pamphlets of CPN-Maoist Publicity Committee before leaving the office and in the process also left behind copy of a blue book of motorcycle with registration Na 21 Pa 1661.

NDEX disclosed that the group had initially demanded Rs 5 million as donation. It had later placed demand for Rs 2.5 million.

According to NDEX, the group damaged the main gate, seven doors, windows, nine computers, a front table, office partitions and other physical properties during the attack. It has estimated the physical loss at over Rs 1.5 million.

Flaying the attack, NDEX has demanded with the government to take stringent action against the attackers. "We urge the government to promptly nab them, take actions against them under Public Security Act, and force them compensate for the loss," the company said.

The company has also urged all the political parties to not protect and encourage the criminals.

Issuing a press statement, Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) too has condemned the incident and urged the government to take stringent actions against the attackers.

The apex body of Nepali private sector has also asked the government to step up security to business firms.

"We also fear that the incidences of such attacks and criminal activities will only continue to grow unless the political parties ended long-running instability," FNCCI has said, and asked the top political leaders to take serious steps to end political deadlock.

Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bhim Dhakal, head at Metropolitan Police Circle, New Baneshwar, said police have acquired call details of some of the people involved in the attack.

Police have also formed a team under the leadership of Police Inspector Khumlal Bhusal to look into the incident and arrest people involved in the incident.

Dhakal said people involved in such criminal activities would be arrested and charged according to the law.

Meanwhile, CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidya on Friday said his party does not have the policy of forceful donation collection. “Neither we have the policy of forceful donation collection, nor we have collected donations forcefully,” Baidya said. “We, however, welcome voluntary donations.”
