KATHMANDU, Nov 16: The meeting of the Constitutional Council called for Tuesday to name a new chief justice was called off after Maoist Chairman and the opposition leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal flew to Singapore on Monday.

The opposition leader is an ex-officio member of the council headed by the prime minister.

“We sent a letter to the opposition leader today [Monday] inviting him for the meeting. But, we were told that he will not be available for the meeting as he will be out of the country. There was no option but to put off the meeting,” said a council source.

The meeting was called to name a new chief justice as the incumbent Chief Justice Min Bahadur Rayamajhi is retiring on December 12.
