Speaking at an interaction organized by Reporters´ Club, Koirala said though there were reports in the media that NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba had been offered the post, UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have yet to agree on a new prime minister.[break]
“There is not a situation to elect new prime minister by forcing the incumbent prime minister to step down immediately,” he said.
Noting that the parties took almost eight months to elect a new prime minister after forcing then Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to step down last year, Koirala urged parties to first decide on a consensual candidate and then ask Prime Minister Khanal to step down.
Koirala said though the five-point deal states that Prime Minister Khanal should step down to pave way for national consensus, it fails to link the issue of concluding peace process with national consensus.
He also urged all parties to think for the cause of the nation rather than concentrating on their petty interests. “Else, the country will turn into Afghanistan,” he further said.
